MAV’s next generation Intelligent ANPR camera, the Rapier 50IQ was released just over a month ago and since then has been a source of great discussion within a number of sectors including Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS). With the announcement of the Rapier 50IQ’s arrival on both Trafficsafe and IFSEC Global it is clear that the industry is excited about the arrival of an Intelligent ANPR Camera that provides its users with much more than is expected.

Since its launch a great number of existing and new partners have asked for demonstrations of the Rapier 50IQ and once they have seen its capabilities the only question has been how many cameras they need, such is the superior performance that has been demonstrated. Among its many benefits the IQ boasts:

  • Eco Credentials for a long, efficient life
  • Powerful Processing
  • Application Developer Friendly
  • ANPR Engine Preloaded
  • The easiest ANPR cameras to install and maintain
  • POE

The feedback we have received has been unanimous in championing the capabilities of this next generation Intelligent ANPR Camera. We look forward to further engagements with many partners who are able to use the Rapier 50IQ to further their success in the wide range of applications this technology has been optimised for. Customer Service – The clue is in the title

  • Blog

24 Feb, 2015

I have had mixed experiences when dealing with customer service personnel. Some seem to think they will get an award for getting me off the phone as quickly as possible (and maybe they do) and others will quite happily ignore everything I say and try and sell me something I neither want nor called about. On the rare occasion I get someone who both cares and wants to help, it rekindles my faith in people but this should be the expected not the surprise.

At MAV we have a very different approach, if we don’t sell what you need, we will tell you where you can find it and wish you well. We will not attempt to make a square peg fit a round hole, if an ANPR camera is not the right thing to have, it will not be what we offer. If we do think we can meet your specific needs, we will discuss your unique requirements and the intended objectives to make sure we offer the best solution. On many occasions we have designed bespoke solutions to meet customer specifications because we know that one size does not fit all no matter what we are told by supply led organisations.

When a successful partnership is developed with needs identified and met this is by no means the end. Full product life support is our standard service meaning you can call us the day after you buy a product or in a year’s time, we will always be happy to help. We get to know our partners, providing updates and information in advance of requests to ensure efficiency of service. As a demand led business we are fluid in our provision of ANPR cameras, pro-active in development and reactive to needs. Whilst we know we are very much in the minority in our approach to customer service we don’t think that makes any difference. Our partners are as important on day 1000 as on day 1, the only difference being the strength of partnership developed.

Customer service is the silver bullet, at MAV we work hard to ensure your targets are consistently hit, providing a full support package for all partners who may be used to hearing all the noise without any action from others. It seems that many are firing blanks.

Having launched our next generation Intelligent ANPR Camera last week we have been overwhelmed by the reaction we received. A number of our existing, and a great many new, partners have been contacting us to find out more about the new Intelligent ANPR Camera and their initial reactions have been hugely positive. The access to metadata for bespoke use, PoE capability, Zoom lens inclusion and cost effective solution provision are amongst some of the benefits that have been highlighted by respondents. We mentioned on release that a lot of businesses use ‘next generation’ and ‘breaking down barriers’ as buzz words rather than concepts but the Rapier 50IQ truly is unique and is the very definition of these terms.

The support has not only been from partnerships, a large number of publications have picked up the exciting news about the launch, a few examples are provided below:

12 Jan, 2015

MAV Systems Ltd, an international leader in ANPR technology, has launched their next generation Intelligent ANPR Camera, The Rapier 50IQ.

The Rapier 50IQ incorporates HD image quality, motorised zoom cameras, high speed ANPR recognition and maxIRange pulsed IR lighting in one efficient unit. A perfect balance of low power consumption and superior performance capabilities, coupled with the latest generation of ANPR engine and simple installation takes intelligent cameras to the next level.

Rapier 50IQ Intelligent Camera details

To provide their partners with the industry leading intelligent camera, MAV have worked with a third party ANPR software provider to enable the IQ camera to provide a complete plate reading solution. The Rapier IQ’s ANPR engine performs at the highest level of accuracy but, more importantly, provides metadata that allows our partners to develop new and novel applications unique to them and their industry at low cost and high speed. To do this, the Rapier IQ provides access to packets of data in JSON format. This additional metadata allows application developers to build their own IPR by creating rules and analysis techniques to recognise events such as illegal turns, exit/entry violations, direction and speed of travel alongside the ANPR read itself.

Of the Rapier IQ, Steve Walker, Managing Director of MAV stated:
“Everyone likes to talk about the next generation and breaking barriers but when referring to the Rapier IQ such terms are true. From the low power consumption and simple installation to the advanced open platform metadata capabilities, the Rapier IQ has been developed to empower our partners do what they do better. This level of performance, capability, reliability and technology has never been seen before in a single unit so efficiently designed. The reaction of partners who have tested the IQ to date has been overwhelmingly positive and we cannot wait to spread the word far and wide.”

Peter Henden, Technical Director of MAV summarised his views:
“Rapier IQ brings together the best ANPR technologies in one package. Combining the right balance of video processing, cameras and illumination technologies has allowed us to create an intelligent camera we can proudly and confidently launch with the Rapier name for professional quality and performance. The Rapier 50IQ is a truly awesome product and watch this space for more from the IQ family throughout the year.”

Driverless cars unleashed in the UK

  • News

8 Dec, 2014

Driverless cars are to be tested on roads in Greenwich, Milton Keynes and Coventry, and Bristol from next month after the area’s bids to run the trials were approved in a competition.

£10m of funding from Innovate UK, the Technology Strategy Board sponsored by the Department of Business, Innovation and Skills, will allow the testing of driverless cars in a real-world environment in a bid to achieve “greater levels of understanding of these vehicles”. The trials, Innovate UK said, would also “allow the public to accept how the vehicles will fit into everyday life”.

The Government wants to establish the UK as the global hub for the research, development and integration of driverless vehicles. The DfT intervened to put in place a study of driver and other road user reactions to the driverless vehicles “to reassure the public”.

Nick Jones, lead technologist for the low carbon vehicle innovation platform at Innovate UK, said: “Cars that drive themselves would represent the most significant transformation in road travel since the introduction of the internal combustion engine. But it’s vital that trials are carried out safely, and… we learn everything we can through the trials so that legal, regulation and protection issues don’t get in the way.”

Ensure you insure

  • News

4 Dec, 2014

More than 75 vehicles were seized by police in Northamptonshire during a month-long operation to target those who drive on the county’s roads without proper insurance.

The operation aimed to send a clear message that those who get behind the wheel without valid insurance will be identified and prosecuted.

The operation ran from October 27 to November 21, with officers targeting busy main roads and using automatic number plate recognition technology (ANPR) to identify the uninsured vehicles.

The drivers were then stopped and their vehicles seized.

In total, 77 vehicles were seized over the four-week period.

The operation involved officers from Northamptonshire Police and colleagues from neighbouring forces who form part of the East Midlands Operational Support Service.

Sergeant Darron Bishop, who led the operation, said: “Although this was a specific operation to focus on uninsured drivers, it’s something we look out for all year round and the message is clear – there is no excuse for not having insurance; it is illegal and officers will seize your vehicle if you are not covered,”

ANPR cameras are supporting police forces throughout the world to reduce the number of uninsured drivers, reducing risk to other drivers and helping to drive down insurance premiums

ANPR – providing 5 times more pocket money

  • News

25 Nov, 2014

A man who stole firewood collected for sale by two children has met them to apologise for his actions.

The 61-year-old enlisted the help of his grandson in stealing two bags of kindling from outside a house in Bishopsbourne, near Canterbury, on Saturday 18 October.

CCTV footage of the scene showed the man driving away in a red Peugeot 407, which was later spotted by ANPR (automatic number plate recognition) cameras in Folkestone and tracked down to an address in Ash.

He voluntarily attended Canterbury police station on 18 November and admitted to stealing the wood, which was valued at £8.

“Following a discussion with the children’s parents, it was agreed that the man should make amends by meeting the family to apologise.
The children had collected, chopped and bagged the wood and planned to sell it for some pocket money. The man who took it clearly did not consider their feelings but has now accepted what he did was wrong. As well as apologising to the family, he also agreed to pay the children £20 each as a way of making amends for his actions.”

ANPR cameras supporting the safety of vulnerable people

  • News

17 Nov, 2014

Five men and two women have been sentenced to a total of more than 16 years in prison after conspiring to target elderly people at supermarkets across Kent. The criminals, all from the Dagenham area, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to steal and conspiracy to commit fraud after elderly people were conned out of thousands of pounds.

The group of fraudsters obtained Personal Identification Numbers (PINs) from the victims by ‘shoulder surfing’ at supermarket checkouts or cash machines. Typically, they would watch the victim input their PIN, then distract them in a car park using techniques such as asking for directions to the local hospital in order to steal the victim’s bank cards while distracted. Between January and March 2014 offences were reported in Sevenoaks, Tonbridge, Maidstone, Strood, Rainham, Gillingham, Sittingbourne, Whitstable, Hawkinge, Folkestone and Hythe. All 12 victims were elderly people, with the eldest being 88 years-old.

Using store CCTV and Automatic Number Plate Recognition technology (ANPR), detectives carried out extensive research and identified a Ford Focus and a Volkswagen Passat they believed were involved in the offences. On March 27, a day when three separate offences occurred in Kent, the two vehicles were located and stopped by Kent Police officers in Ilford in East London. The cars were searched and bank cards were found concealed behind a headlight compartment in one of the cars. The group was linked to a thirteenth offence, which occurred in Hertfordshire on March 26 2014. In all, their victims were defrauded out of more than £3,000. A member of the gang later admitted to further offences which had taken place in Hertfordshire dating back March 2013.

Judge Griffith-Jones referred to the group as an ‘organised gang’ and said that it was a carefully targeted conspiracy.

Detective Constable Helen King from the Kent and Essex Serious Crime Directorate said: “The common factor in all these offences was that the offenders targeted elderly or vulnerable people. The offenders worked in teams, and once they had the victim’s PIN they acted quickly to confuse or distract the victims in the car park, whilst simultaneously stealing their bank cards.

“They operated across Kent, sometimes swapping clothing to avoid detection, but we collected a huge amount of CCTV and electronic data that put them firmly in the location when the offences were taking place. When we inevitably caught up with them and our evidence was put to them they were left with little choice but to plead guilty. This has been a long running investigation but its conclusion is very satisfying and we will continue to pursue those who target the most vulnerable in society.

When you have been summoned, you should answer – Kuala Lumpur

  • News

11 Nov, 2014

Kuala Lumpur Police will use Automated Licence Plate Recognition (ALPR) equipment to identify foreign cars with outstanding summons, when entering the country.

The Auditor General’s report said the move was among measures to ensure foreigners with outstanding traffic summons settled their dues.

The AG’s report said 16.3 million summons were issued by the traffic police from 2011 to 2013 and from the total, 121,664 were summons issued to foreigners.

“Singaporeans top the total number of summons with (84,604), followed by Brunei with (25,803),” the report said adding that only 12,713 summons have been settled while the outstanding balance from the unsettled summons amounts to RM7.63 million.

For locals, only 6.7 million summons have been settled from 2011 to 2013, worth RM1.244 billion, said the report.

ALPR cameras are increasingly being used to support police in many such actions ensuring the safety and security of the world’s citizens as well as enforcing the law to all whether visitors or residents.
